Baccarat & Blackjack Basics

Learn the essentials of baccarat and blackjack, traditionally played with classic vintage cards. Master the odds and improve your gameplay.

Blackjack: The Race to 21

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games in the world. The objective is simple: beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. If you go over 21, you "bust" and lose your bet automatically.

Card values are straightforward: numbered cards are worth their face value, face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) are worth 10, and Aces can be worth either 1 or 11, depending on which value benefits your hand more.

Basic Strategy

While luck plays a role, blackjack is a game of skill. Basic strategy charts tell you the mathematically optimal move for every possible hand combination against every possible dealer up-card. Learning basic strategy can significantly reduce the house edge.

Baccarat: The Game of Elegance

Baccarat has a reputation for being an exclusive, high-roller game, often associated with James Bond. However, the rules are surprisingly simple. It's essentially a guessing game where you bet on which of two hands—the "Player" or the "Banker"—will have a total value closest to 9.

In baccarat, face cards and 10s are worth zero, Aces are worth 1, and all other cards are worth their face value. If the total of a hand exceeds 9, the first digit is dropped. For example, a hand consisting of a 7 and an 8 totals 15, but the value is 5.

"There's a certain romance to baccarat. Dealing the cards from a classic shoe, the slow reveal—it's a game of pure chance wrapped in unparalleled elegance."

Betting Options

You have three main betting options in baccarat:

  • Player: Betting that the Player hand will win. Pays 1:1.
  • Banker: Betting that the Banker hand will win. Pays 1:1 (usually minus a 5% commission, as the Banker hand has a slight statistical advantage).
  • Tie: Betting that both hands will have the same total. Pays 8:1 or 9:1, but has a high house edge.

The Importance of the Deck

Both blackjack and baccarat rely heavily on the physical cards. In high-end casinos, baccarat is played with fresh decks that are often discarded after a single shoe. When playing at home or in private games, using a premium, classic deck enhances the tactile experience. The smooth finish allows for perfect dealing, and the classic court designs add a touch of vintage casino glamour to your table.
